Mathematica at Mason

Mathematica is a symbolic mathematics software package available from Wolfram, Inc. and is available to all members of the GMU community (faculty, staff and students). To use Mathematica you will need an activation key (or access to our license server).

The following instructions are for Mathematica version 10

Students

If you want to use Mathematica on your computer you will need an activation key. To begin the process you will need a Wolfram ID. You must use your MasonLive email address when obtaining your Wolfram ID.

Complete the following steps to obtain your activation key, download Mathematica, and activate Mathematica.

1) Obtain a Wolfram ID at this link if you do not already have one

2) Apply for a Mathematica activation key at this link. Verify that the information in section one is entered correctly, leave sections two and three at their defaults and submit the form. The activation key will be automatically generated and shown to you. A copy of the key will also be sent to your email address. The key will always be available through your Wolfram ID if you need it again in the future.

3) Download Mathematica from one of the three links at the bottom of this page by choosing the correct link for your type of computer.

4) See the detailed installation instructions available from Wolfram at this link. Choose from among the top three links at the top of that page depending on your specific hardware. Launch the installer downloaded in the prior step by double clicking it. The default selections are correct for most users.

5) Launch Mathematica and enter your activation key when the program requests it. The activation key will only be required once. Wolfram provides detailed instructions for activating the software at this link. Follow the directions for either online or manual activation on that page.

Faculty/Staff

Faculty and staff have two licensing options based on the ownership of the equipment. If you want to use Mathematica on your GMU owned equipment you will need an activation key. To begin the process you will need a Wolfram ID. You must use your GMU email address (not a masonlive address) when obtaining your Wolfram ID. The following steps are required to obtain your license:

1) Obtain a Wolfram ID at this link if you do not already have one

2) Apply for a Mathematica activation key at this link.

3) Download the software from the links below.

4) You will receive an activation key at the email address you used to create the Wolfram ID. You will need this key to complete the next step.

5) Wolfram provides instructions for activating the software at this link. Follow the directions for either online or manual activation on that page.

If you are Faculty/Staff and want to use Mathematica on your personally owned equipment you will need a Home-Use License — students are not eligible for a home use license. The following steps are required to obtain the activation key:

1) Apply for a Mathematica activation key at this link. Use L2994-4898 for the license number on that page and make sure you use your Faculty/Staff GMU email address.

2) Within two business days you will receive an email with a download link to a version of Mathemtica keyed to your home use license. Please use the instructions in your email to download and install your copy of Mathematica.

Lab Installation

These instructions are primarily for lab installations. Most users will not use the network license server described below.

1) Download Mathematica from the links below.

2) Install and start Mathematica

3) Use the machine name sv01.cos.gmu.edu as your license server when prompted for a server name.
